The Season Draws to a Close

Its that time of year and the sun has been shining to close off the season in the Chamonix Valley. It has been a long season and looking back it is nearly 5 months since I first put on my skis. I am going  to try and make it a full 5 months and to do that I will need to ski on 2nd May. With Grand Montets closing on 1st May that may demand a short tour with no lift access being available other than the Midi.

Although there has been enormous falls of snow this season we have not been blessed with the best of weather. Snow and high winds have been the order of the day and I was told recently that we only had 21 days of sun this winter!

Balme was, and still is,full of snow. Some Spring conditions allowed a good run from Tete de Balme to the reservoir above Chatelard. Good spring snow until the last two hundred metres which turned to mank. It took about 40 minutes to skin back to the Tete de Balme Chair. We met a young couple at the reservoir who had made the mistake of following ski tracks just a bit  too far. They were on downhill equipment and paid for their mistake with a very difficult boot pack which may have taken them hours in deep wet snow. Although they were in no danger I imagine they would have been pretty  tired after the climb.  Maybe a lesson learned.

We had a day on the Midi in pretty slushy conditions. It was very quiet and the skiing was pretty good considering the temperatures. The setting alone makes the trip worthwhile.

I had a quick couple of runs on piste in decent conditions  Index and Floria were open and the pistes were in pretty good condition. Off the hill by 11.30 before it was too slushy. It was crazy to watch the golfers in shorts and T -Shirts from the cable car. The course looked in great condition

With just Grand Montets open and the Musilac Festival finished I am sure that it will be exceptionally quiet this week.
