A Brief Glimpse of Spring

The weather has continued to be problematic. I was hoping that March/April would bring a settled high pressure period with cold nights, blue skies and warm days leading to spring snow and some touring possibilities. Alas no. As I sit here it is very warm, a bit overcast and the valley is suffering from a Föhn wind period. Not great for anything really.

Easter weekend brought a surprising 2 days of lift served powder skiing. No photo opportunities  as we made the most of it. As with many April powder days the good snow only lasted till early afternoon with the temperature rising rapidly.

Then – a bit of Spring! Freeze thaw conditions allowed us to have a couple of laps of the meadows at Charme on the backside of Les Houches. This  is a very gentle glade, in summer a pasture with a farm selling cheese, set against an amazing backdrop of Mont Blanc, the Bionnassay Glacier and Tricot.

The next day Le Tour provided a couple of laps of spring snow from the Possettes poma. The snow was a bit soft and variable so we skinned up to just above Lac Charamillon. The northerly aspect and lack of sun made the skin track from the previous day icy and allowed much needed practice with our ski  crampons. The reward was solitude, great views towards Chamonix   and a combination of chalky soft snow and softish spring snow on the descent

This week doesn’t look great for conditions but the first cyclists/flowers  are appearing. It will soon be that time again.
